In the recent 72nd Miss Universe 2023 pageant held at the Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda in San Salvador, El Salvador, on November 18, 2023, eighty-four stunning contestants vied for the crown, ultimately clinched by Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Despite a strong showing by Michelle Marquez Dee, the Philippines’ delegate and daughter of our Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez, who finished as a top 10 finalist, there was widespread disappointment among Filipinos regarding the Miss Universe management’s decision-making process. Some raised suspicions after an initial Facebook post by Miss Universe management listed Dee as a finalist, only for it to be deleted minutes later, replaced by a new announcement claiming to be the authentic final list.
Despite these frustrations, Filipinos rallied behind Michelle, acknowledging her journey and efforts leading up to the pageant. Her positive demeanor and stunning gown, inspired by Apo Whang Od’s “pagbabatok” tattoo technique, garnered praise for elegantly showcasing Philippine culture, designed by Mark Bumgarner.
According to a Capstone-Intel study, discussions surrounding the event and Michelle totaled 11,438 posts, with 22,660,802 reactions, predominantly positive. Despite Michelle’s inability to secure the crown, 77% of mentions about Miss Universe 2023 were positive, reflecting admiration for her and the event.
While some may view this as the end of the story, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the strength, courage, and passion of Filipinas, showcasing our resilience and unique cultural identity.
