In recent years, support for the LGBTQ+ community has significantly grown in strength and visibility.

What is LGBTQ+?

LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning, with the “+” representing other sexual orientations and gender identities not explicitly mentioned. This term encompasses a wide range of individuals who identify as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, emphasizing the inclusivity of the community. Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have faced discrimination, prejudice, and marginalization, which led to the rise of various advocacy groups and social movements fighting for their rights and equality. The LGBTQ+ community is vibrant and diverse, including people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and cultures.

Factors Highlighting Increased Support

Several key factors have contributed to the rise in support for the LGBTQ+ community:

  1. Growing Acceptance and Understanding: Society’s increasing acceptance and understanding of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities have played a vital role. Traditional norms are being challenged, and the idea that love and identity are not confined to limited definitions is gaining traction. This shift has created an environment where individuals feel more comfortable expressing their true selves, leading to greater demand for LGBTQ+ rights and protections.
  2. Rise of Social Media: Social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok have amplified LGBTQ+ voices and connected communities worldwide. These platforms allow individuals to share their experiences, stories, and struggles, fostering solidarity and empowerment. This virtual interconnectedness has enabled LGBTQ+ individuals to find support and build networks, creating a stronger sense of community that transcends geographical boundaries.
  3. Activism and Advocacy: The LGBTQ+ rights movement has gained momentum through tireless activism and advocacy efforts. From grassroots movements to high-profile campaigns, activists have fought for equal rights, increased visibility, and societal acceptance. Their efforts have raised awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and successfully pushed for policy changes and legal protections. This activism has influenced public opinion and inspired others to join the cause, resulting in a growing support base.

Evident Support in Brand Marketing

One clear indicator of support for the LGBTQ+ community is the increasing use of LGBTQ+ individuals as endorsers in brand marketing. This trend reflects growing acceptance and recognition of the LGBTQ+ community in mainstream society. By featuring LGBTQ+ endorsers, brands showcase their commitment to diversity and inclusion and send a strong message of support and solidarity to the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.

A notable example is McDonald’s recent advertising campaign, which featured Vice Ganda and Paolo Ballesteros, both well-known LGBTQ+ celebrities. By selecting these individuals, McDonald’s not only tapped into their immense popularity but also made a bold statement about their support for LGBTQ+ rights. This move resonated with the LGBTQ+ community and garnered attention and praise from a wider audience who appreciate and value diversity and inclusion.

According to a study by Capstone-Intel, McDonald’s achieved an impressive engagement score of 29,247.4 based on their total post count of 564, resulting in over 134,614 total reactions. “Facebook love” accounted for 49.9 percent of the total reactions with 67,108 reactions, followed by “Facebook like” with 51,666 reactions (38.4 percent), “Facebook haha” with 7,251 reactions (5.4 percent), “Facebook wow” with 7,047 reactions (5.2 percent), “Facebook sad” with 1,458 reactions (1.1 percent), and “Facebook angry” with 84 reactions.
