The Manila city government pledged on Saturday to hold the former garbage collection contractor accountable for neglecting its duties during the holiday season.
Mayor Honey Lacuna criticized Leonel Waste Management Corp. for failing to fulfill its responsibilities amid a 400% increase in waste generated during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“Rest assured, I will not let this sabotage pass and those responsible will be held accountable,” she stated.
To address the issue, Lacuna announced that two companies, MetroWaste and PhilEco Systems Corp., have taken over operations, working non-stop to clear the streets of accumulated trash.
“We will address the negligence of the previous garbage collector. Now, we have two contractors, MetroWaste and PhilEco, ensuring that the city is cleaned efficiently,” she added.
The mayor also urged residents to report uncollected garbage to the city’s Department of Public Services and Task Force Against Road Obstruction.
